In 1911 Dr. Franklin Lawson, a noted musician and voice teacher, purchased a farm and its 200 surrounding acres in order to establish a retreat for musicians. He named this retreat 'Musicolony'. Roads were plotted and each was named for a famous musical composer. Later in the 1920s, the name of the community was changed to Shelter Harbor. Each of our wine dinners this year will honor one of those musical composers. Handel Rossini Gounod Donizetti Brahms Verdi Gershwin
A historical note: Musicians would travel from New York City to Newport for the summer concert season. In 1911, the preferred method of travel was the railroad to Westerly. From there, a trolley ran from the train station to Watch Hill, and a regular steamship line completed the journey to Newport. Dr. Lawson's 'Musicolony' provided a haven for the musicians and their families, before and after the summer season. |
